Access

  • The following Montana-licensed health care providers are authorized to access the online MPDR service by registering to view the prescription history of patients who are under their care or who have been referred to them for care: Physicians, Dentists, Naturopathic Physicians, Optometrists, Pharmacists, Physician Assistants, Podiatrists and APRNs with a Prescriptive Authority endorsement.
  • Montana licensed prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances are required to register with the MPDR.

MPDR Requirements

As a reminder, the following MPDR requirements were established in the 2019 Legislative Session:

  • Mandatory Registration and Fee Payment: Effective October 1, 2019, all Montana licensees authorized to prescribe or dispense prescription drugs are required to register with the MPDR, Montana Code Annotated (MCA) MCA 37-7-1503, and pay the annual $30 MPDR fee at the time of license renewal, MCA 37-7-1511.
  • Prescriber Mandatory Use: Effective July 1, 2021, a prescriber, or an agent of the prescriber, is required to search a patient’s MPDR record before issuing a prescription for an opioid or a benzodiazepines to the patient, except in certain circumstances, MCA 37-7-1515.

PMP AWARxE Features

Key features of the MPDR software system, PMP AWARxE, include: 

  • Coming Soon! Mandatory Use Reports - Reports for prescribers comparing their prescribing and MPDR search history based on certain thresholds. This report is intended to give prescribers insight into their compliance with Mandatory Use of the MPDR. See Mandatory Use Module for details. 
  • Notices - Secure one-way messaging to the MPDR administrator through PMP AWARxE.

  • Patient Profile Matching – This function merges profiles with name variations. (i.e. Robert Jones and Bobby Jones with the same DOB and/or address).
  • NarxCare Clinical Tools – NarxCare scores and graphs summarize a patient’s controlled substance history and potential risk. See the NarxCare Fact Sheet for details or visit the NarxCare Support Center
  • Workflow Integration – MPDR has partnered with the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services to fund statewide integration through PMP Gateway. Integration allows access to MPDR information directly through health information systems, including electronic health records, health information exchange, and pharmacy dispensing systems.   • Prescriber Reports –Prescriber Reports are intended to give prescribers insight into their controlled substance prescribing patterns compared to their peers. Reports are provided quarterly to all registered users with an active account and a defined role and specialty who have written at least one opioid, sedative, or stimulant prescription during the prior 6-month period.
