Pharmacy Technician

The following outlines general pharmacy technician licensing information.  Apply online by creating an account, select “Start A New License Application”, select “New Health Care License”, then select “Certified Pharmacy Technician”.   IMPORTANT UPDATE:  the previous technician-in-training license is no longer issued and is now called a provisional certified pharmacy technician license and is valid for one year. 

  • All Fees are Non-Refundable $35.00
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate.
    • Pharmacy Technician certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT) or other board approved certifying entity.
    • The previous technician-in-training license is no longer issued and has been replaced by a PROVISIONAL certified pharmacy technician license.  The provisional license is valid for 12 months during which time a licensee can achieve certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT). 
      • NOTE:  The provisional licensee (formerly technician-in-training) must notify the Board of their successful examination result within the 12-month timeline for the license to be converted to a Certified Pharmacy Technician license without having to submit a new application.
  • May 2 - June 30
    Late Renew Online for 45 days until Aug. 14
  • Active $30 / Late Fee $30
  • An individual seeking a provisional certified pharmacy technician license (formerly technician-in-training) must be employed by a Montana pharmacy.
