Welcome to the Montana Board of Psychologists

The Board of Psychologists makes every effort to include on this website all relevant information pertaining to the licensing and regulation of psychologists, behavior analysts and assistant behavior analysts in Montana.

Attention Licensees: This is a reminder that the continuing education cycle has changed. All continuing education is now due on odd-numbered years (2021).  This includes the new requirement for two hours in ethics and one hour in suicide prevention.

Important Information Regarding Continuing Education for the 2021 Renewal Cycle: The Board of Psychologists determined at the February 11th, 2022 board meeting that due to the short notice regarding the effective date of the new Continuing Education (CE) rules, the board will not perform a CE audit for the 2020/2021 renewal cycle.  This applies to all license types – Psychologists, Behavior Analysts, and Assistant Behavior Analysts.  Although a CE audit will not be performed, the board acknowledges and recognizes that CE is an important part of continued competency and strongly encourages licensees to stay up to date with their CE.  The audit will continue on the 2022/2023 CE cycle.

  • Amendments to this board’s administrative rules take effect on 12/9/23. In addition to updates to the board’s telehealth rules resulting from 2021 legislation, the changes eliminate unnecessary, redundant, and overburdensome regulations and those duplicated in statute to increase overall accuracy and ease of use for the public and staff.

    Copies of the original proposal and final adoption notices can be found on the board rule notice page under MAR 24-189-44.

  • New Sexual Offender Evaluator License Endorsement – Qualified Licensees Can Start Applying

    Beginning in early January, LCSWs, LCPCs, LMFTs, physicians (psychiatrists), psychologists, and APRNs with psychiatric mental health certifications who wish to perform sexual offender evaluations under their existing scopes of practice must apply for and obtain an endorsement to their existing license. This endorsement is a new requirement to implement SB 39 (2021) which was passed by the Legislature and affects these licensees who are licensed by four different licensing boards: Boards of Behavioral Health, Medical Examiners, Nursing, and Psychologists.

    For information on the requirements to qualify for an endorsement and how to submit an online application click here.

  • On March 1, 2019, the Montana Department of Justice increased the fee for a Federal Fingerprint-Based Check to $30.00 for background checks conducted for pre-employment, employment, and licensing purposes.

    The background check and fee includes the Montana WIN check, as required by the FBI.  Statutory authority is required to conduct these checks.

    Please contact the Montana Department of Justice at (406) 444-3625 for more information regarding this fee change.

  • Psychologists licensed by the Montana Board of Psychologists may wish to educate or inform the public with respect to what makes the psychologist competent to conduct, interpret, and analyze a psychological assessment.  This may be especially true in light of legislative changes that allow certain licensees of other professions to hold themselves out as being qualified to engage in similar conduct.  While licensed psychologists are not prohibited from providing the public any consumer notice that is accurate and appropriate, the following statement, when taken in its entirety, has been expressly approved by the Montana Board of Psychologists:

    The Psychological Assessment you are about to review was prepared by a psychologist duly licensed in Montana whose qualifications were established by meeting all of the following requirements:

    1. a doctorate degree in psychology from an accredited institution with curriculum standards that meet the approval of the American Psychological Association or similar curriculum guidelines established by the Montana Board of Psychologists;
    2. two years of supervised experience in the field of psychology under the direction of qualified professionals (including a year of residency training at the educational institution where the doctoral degree was awarded);
    3. a detailed and comprehensive application that must meet the approval of the Montana Board of Psychologists;
    4. a nationally standardized and administered written examination specific to competency in psychological assessments.
  • In Montana, only licensed psychologists are required in this way to demonstrate their competence to conduct, interpret, and analyze psychological assessments.  Other professionals describing their work as “psychological assessments” are not subject to similar requirements to establish their qualifications.
