Montana Board of Plumbers

FAQ

  • Montana has two classes of licensure: Journeyman and Master. To qualify to sit for the examination for a Journeyman license, you must have 5 years experience in the field of plumbing, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program. To qualify to sit for the examination for a Master license, you must have 4 years experience as a licensed Journeyman plumber, with 3 of those years either working for a Master plumber, or in a supervisory capacity. Complete licensure requirements can be found by reviewing the Statutes and Rules under the Regulations Tab on this website.
  • Exams are offered by IAPMO

I failed the exam; can I get another temporary license?

The Department may issue a second temporary Journeyman license if you failed the practical examination with a score of 65% - 69%, and you are scheduled for the next examination and paid the applicable fees. All other requests for temporary licenses must be submitted to the Board in writing.

  • What if my experience is from a state that doesn't license plumbers the same way as Montana?

Applicants from states with no Journeyman or Master licensing shall provide the Experience Verification Affidavit , or notarized letter from a qualified individual(s) acceptable to the board, with direct knowledge of the applicant's quality and number of years of plumbing experience equivalent to five years for the Journeyman license and nine years for the Master license.

  • Because I owned my own business in another state, I can't provide any of the affidavits or letters..

Because I owned my own business in another state, I can't provide any of the affidavits or letters required. Now what?

Other documentation such as W-2 forms or other time/pay records may be used to supplement experience documentation when none of the other forms listed in the Experience Verification Affidavit above are available due to unusual or unforeseen circumstances. It is required that you provide a letter fully explaining those circumstances.

  • What states will Montana reciprocate with AND can I work in Montana as a plumber with my Idaho/North Dakota/South Dakota/Oregon Journeyman license?

Montana has reciprocity agreements for Journeyman licensure only with Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota and South Dakota. Montana does not reciprocate a Master license. If you have passed the Journeyman plumbing written and practical exams in one of the states we have reciprocity agreements with, and you do not have any complaints on your active license, you will not have to take the Journeyman exam in Montana. If you have not taken a practical examination, you will be required to in accordance with ARM 24.180.603.

  • Can I work in Montana as a plumber with my Idaho/North Dakota/South Dakota/Oregon Journeyman license
No. You must still apply for licensure in Montana by reciprocity.
  • Yes. However, a master plumber license is required to obtain plumbing permits. A journeyman's plumber's license does not authorize the individual to obtain a plumbing permit or to engage in or advertise as a plumbing business.
  • Permits are handled through the Building Codes Bureau. Only Master plumbers are authorized to apply for and obtain permits.
  • Code books may be ordered by contacting IAPMO at 800.854.2766.
