Elevator License

The following outlines general licensing information. For specific information on filing an application, you will need to obtain the license application (contractormechanicinspector,) which includes a detailed listing of the requirements.
    1. Application for license by examination(Applies to all categories and includes original license fee) $200
    2. Contractor - original license fee $600
    3. Annual renewal fee for all categories of licensure, except contractor  $150
    4. Annual renewal fee for contractor license $600
    5. Application for license by endorsement or reciprocity (Includes original license fee) $150
    6. Temporary permit $50
    7. Re-exam fee $50
    8. Continuing education course curriculum approval $200
  • Elevator Mechanics or Limited Mechanics do not have specific education requirements.
    Elevator Inspectors are required to possess current certification as an elevator inspector.
  • Elevator Mechanics - three years of conveyance work
    Limited Mechanics - one year of conveyance work
  • Mechanic Examinations are open-book, 2 ½ hour time limit and a passing score is 70% or better.  When taking the exam, you are allowed to bring in the following:

    • ASME A17-1-2004 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators
    • ASME A18.1 2003 Safety Standards for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts
    • Administrative Rules of Montana 24.142 Elevator Licensing Program

     
  • Licenses need to be renewed on an annual basis. All licenses expire on April 1st of every year
  • Elevator Mechanics and Limited Mechanics are required to complete eight hours of continuing education per license term
  • Elevator Contractors and Limited Elevator Contractors are required to provide the following:
    1. Montana Contractor Registration (406) 444-7734
    2. Proof of liability insurance pursuant to 50-60-716 MCA (See application for details)
    3. Certificate of Existence or Certificate of Fact issued by the  Montana Secretary of State's office (406) 444-3665
