Montana Board of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists

License Information

The board offers the following license types:

  • Audiologist
  • Audiology Assistant
  • Limited Speech-Language Pathologist
  • Speech-Language Pathologist
  • Speech-Language Pathology Assistant
  • Speech-Language Pathologist-Audiologist

Audiology Assistant Training

Per Administrative Rules of Montana 24.222.550 and approved January 17, 2025, at a public board meeting, the "10 hours of additional board-approved training" for high-school-level Audiology Assistant applicants can be from any of the following:

  • A Montana-licensed Audiologist in good standing
  • audiologyonline.com
  • audiologyacademy.com
  • An Audiology Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) or the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA)
  • An Audiology Assistant program offered by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), or the Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA)

Proof of such training should be evidenced by a certificate of completion or signed documentation from the trainer.

Fingerprints Coming soon

FBI work is in progress to require all applicants to submit a fingerprint background check. You can do this in person in Helena or by mail from anywhere in the world. Find instructions at dojmt.gov/dci-home/background-checks.

Requirements for each license type are laid out in Montana Code Annotated, Title 37, Chapter 15, and Administrative Rules Of Montana, Title 24, Chapter 222. A simplified checklist can be found here.

Renewals

Only the Limited Speech-Language Pathologist license cannot be renewed; it is good for two years, after which a new application must be submitted.

For all other license types, the renewal period is December 4–January 31 each year. Licenses expire at the end of January 31, but late renewal is still possible for 45 days after this with a late fee.
